poplar woodcarving, Sandal woodcarving, camphor woodcarving,
Chinese date woodcarving and pear woodcarving etc. are called
by a joint name wood carving. Among them the heaviest one
is yellow poplar woodcarving, which started from Leqing
period and was used for decoration on the framework of dragon
lantern when festival of lantern came. In around 1840, The
handicraftsman named Ye Chengrong made the figure of Laotse
which is the first artwork handed down from ancient times.
Later, the handicraft has been devoluted from Family Ye.
In late Qing dynasty, another handicraftsman named Zhu Zichang
proved the handicraft of yellow poplar woodcarving and made
it a separate artwork on the desk. His works "Jidian monk"
won the excellent prize in the first international match
of Nanyang in 1909. |

In 1915,
another works "hide-and-seek" won the silver medal in Panama
Exposition. Since then, more and more people paid attention
to the yellow poplar woodcarving, and more and more people
entered into this field. The yellow poplar woodcarving in
Wenzhou area started from Song and Yuan dynasties, and were
poplar during Ming and Qing, which together with Dongyang
wood carving and Qingtian stone carving called "three
carvings in Zhejing". Leqing wood carving is in complete
category, and under the base of tradition and the origin
style keeping, breaking through the origin, it was from
"single carving" to "combined carving", "multi carving",
from "round carving" to "chip carving", "root carving".
The technique was tend to excellent, the works were more
